Farther Along

RaisingEbenezerButtonI heard this song at my professor’s funeral. It has been playing in my mind, over and over. I can’t get over it.

These words hung in her office, and I can understand why. Her faith wasn’t so much broadcasted as it was quietly, faithfully lived out every day. May these words encourage you, too. The video below is a song based on the original. I’ve been playing it on repeat around here.

Tempted and tried we’re oft’ made to wonder
Why it should be thus all the day long
While there are others living about us
Never molested, though in the wrong.

Farther along we’ll know all about it
Farther along we’ll understand why
Cheer up my brothers, live in the sunshine
We’ll understand it all by and by.

Faithful to death is our loving saviour
A few more days labour and wait
Toils of the road will then be as nothing
As we walk through that beautiful gate.

Farther along we’ll know all about it
Farther along we’ll understand why
Cheer up my brothers, live in the sunshine
We’ll understand it all by and by.

When we see Jesus coming in glory
When He comes from His home in the sky
Then we shall meet Him in that bright mansion
We’ll understand it all by and by.

Farther along we’ll know all about it
Farther along we’ll understand why
Cheer up my brothers, live in the sunshine
We’ll understand it all by and by.

Often I wonder why I must journey
Over a road so rugged and steep
While there are others living in comfort
While with the lost I labour and weep.

Farther along we’ll know all about it
Farther along we’ll understand why
Cheer up my brothers, live in the sunshine
We’ll understand it all by and by…

This post is part of a 31 Days series on Raising My Ebenezer, part of my story and my own testimony of God’s goodness and faithfulness. As the song Come Thou Fount says, “Here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by Thine help I’m come.” For the month of October, I’ll be writing our story, outlining the Ebenezers in recognition of His mighty hand on our lives. His doings and His workings because of and sometimes in spite of our best efforts. My hope is that you’ll see a lot of Him and little to none of me. Because in the end, it is by His help that we have come this far.
